Week 6 Blog: Due October 7th, 2012
We talked briefly about frames of reference on Tuesday, October 2nd, and we completed a table in our notebooks. The next time you are in the car, walking down the street, riding your bicycle, etc. think about the different reference frames around you. For example, if you were walking down the sidewalk, how does the velocity of a car coming toward you differ from the velocity of a car going in the same direction you are walking? In your comment, briefly describe a situation with different frames of reference and how the different velocities and/or directions would be. Remember to post an original comment PLUS a comment on someone else's post for full credit. If you have any questions, please let me know. Happy posting!

When i was walking on Aldine mail rt. I noticed that a car passed me going the same direction and the speed and velocity seemed like it was going slower than the car that passed me going the opposite direction. The car coming towards seem to be moving really fast when in reality they were going about the same speed. Since i was walking towards that car it was coming faster and since the other car was going the same way as me it did not seem as fast. Your positioning changes alot on how you see the different frames of references.
ReplyDeleteyour right, this lesson changes your perspective on motion. whats more it makes you notice the different perspectives on potion. before it i would have never payed attention.
DeleteIt seems like that to me too. Before learning this i had never noticed the difference. I would just think of the cars just driving. Now, I actually pay attention to the things i see.
DeleteWhen I was on a plane to Florida I noticed that as the plane took off the trees looked like they were moving really fast but it was just the planes speed and velocity that was moving really fast and the trees don't have a speed or velocity!
ReplyDeleteThats Cool i never been on a plane but it would be cool to experience that frame of reference
DeleteI know! It's pretty amazing how physics is around us at all times! Frame of reference has taken over my mind. now, every time i'm in the car, i think of how frame of reference affects every object we pass.
DeleteAna Mendoza
At the airport, there are like belts that move fast that you can walk and stand on and when you look to the side, the people seem to look like they're moving, but they really aren't. I was walking faster than the people walking past slowly going the same direction, so it seemed as if they were walking slower.
ReplyDeleteI've never been on one of those. Its looks cool and fun to stand on. I wonder if you run and look to the side how fast you must feel you're going compared to everyone else.
DeleteI really don't know what are the like belts your talking about but if people say that it seems fun I would like to get on one of them. And yes, I agree with your reference point.
DeleteOnce I was roller blading at the park and there was a person facing me but not moving. When I passed her, she looked like she moving torwad me really fast but she really wasn't. It's like this everywhere but I never really paid much attention to until we learned about it.
ReplyDeleteThats so Funny!! & Yeah I agree with you now that we learned about this in class everyone is paying more attention to it.
DeleteHaha. That is funny! And soo true!
Deleteone time i was in a boat and we were going around 60 knots an hour. the water we were on i noticed when we weren't moving was going in the opposite direction inland at 5 knots per hour. when we were moving the water seemed to be going so much faster. according to the lesson the water from my point of reference was going 65 knots per hour.

DeleteInteresting, but how did you measure the knots per hour of the water while the boat was still?
DeleteMy little brother and i went to the park to bike ride. While bike riding we decided to play a game. We wanted to see who could ride a bike faster. When we both were riding and going the same direction it seemed like we were going pretty fast. Then we faced each other to see who would turn the other direction first before crashing and the distance seemed smaller and we seemed to go ten times faster!!! it was crazy how much faster it seemed while facing each other. Now, that we learned Frames of Reference I understand why it seemed to me this way.
ReplyDeleteIf that was me and my sister I think we would have crashed each other Instead of calculating who went fast :P
DeleteFrames of reference is dangerous. Lol
DeleteI'm suprised y'all didn't collide, lol.
DeleteOnce when I was inside a car which was at a complete stop an 18-wheeler going about 50 mi/hr passed right by us, making the car seem like it was going backwards. After learning about frames of reference I saw that in reality it was my reference point and the fact that the velocity of the car was zero and that the velocity of the 18-wheeler was 50 mi/hr at a right direction.
ReplyDeleteWell you just explained frames of reference in very good detail! I've had that experience before too, it's weird.
DeleteWhen I was walking to my friends house few cars would pass us up but slowly and the opposite direction it seems like it was going soooooo fast and thought we would get ran over D: lol
ReplyDeleteWhen we were running in the morning the cars next to us to me seemed to go slower than the ones that were coming at us. I felt like they were gonna squash us like pancakes.
ReplyDeleteThat's scary, I hope I never get squashed by a car.
Deletei was going to put this but you beat me lol but i have learned about that scary feeling this week running
DeleteWhen I walk home, I notice that the cars that are coming towards me seem to be going faster than the cars going the same direction as I was.
ReplyDeleteOne time I went walking home, because my parents were late in picking me up and I felt that exact same thing
DeleteWhile driving on the freeway, the cars going in the same direction as you seem to be hardly moving at all, but if you have ever changed a flat tire alongside the freeway like i have, you will notice that the cars are moving extremely fast.
ReplyDeleteyeah i have been on the side of the freeway and the cars go faster than when your driving next to them
DeleteThis statement is so true
DeleteToo true, even as the cars speed past im always thinking, "Was that how fast we usually go?"
Deletewhen i was walking to my house the cars looked like they were coming fast towards me butwhen i'm in a car they look like they are going the same speed
ReplyDeleteAt an amusement park like six flags, just looking at the rides especially the big roller coasters from the ground they don't look like their going that fast, but once you're on the ride it feels as if you're going 100mph.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of the time we went to six flags with band! Good day, but I felt different. When we were in line waiting to get on a ride, the rides would seem a lot faster to me compared to the way they actually felt.
DeleteThis is a good one! I know exactly what you mean, and also, when you get off the ride, your head is spinning and you feel as if you're still going the same speed as the roller coaster but in reality you're not.
DeleteWhen i go jogging the cars look like they're going extremely fast but when you're driving they look really slow
ReplyDeleteThats a great frame of reference example. It shows the different motions:)
DeleteUsually when we are driving or in a car we see the cars going in the same direction as going slow or not too fast but the cars goin in the opposite direccion look like they're going really fast.
ReplyDeleteSo right now my family is going out to eat and we are on the freeway. Then a cop car races passed us going in the same direction. I think it was going like 80 and we were 60. It didn't look like it was going that much faster than us even though it was above speed limit.
ReplyDeleteHey that reminds me on time my family was in a small country town and my dad was going 80mph and we got pulled over.
DeleteWhen me and my brother go race with our bikes the bikes seem to go the same speed, but whenanother bike goes an opposite direction,Its seems to go REALLY fast..Which now i have noticed they all are going to a similar speed.
ReplyDeleteYeah it always looks like they are going to crash with each other when they go opposite directions since from the point of view of the rider the other person is going really fast.
DeleteSo every wednesday the Brigade Belles run their mile. And as I was running the cross-country guys were running too, but in the opposite direction. When I was running they seemed to be running at a faster speed than me.And when I was done running and i turned their way they looked like they slowed down but once they passed me up and I turned the opposite way they looked like they started running faster.Too bad i'll never be able to run at their pace lol.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was little and I would look at the clouds and when you are in the car it seems your going faster than the clouds but the clouds are going faster due to the Earth's rotation and rotating around the sun.
ReplyDeleteI would always think it's us moving faster
DeleteI thought the same it was moving faster
DeleteEverytime I drive pass a statue it appears as if it's coming towards me but it's actually me who's driving fast and the statue is just there not moving
ReplyDeletethat also see that but i see in tree, I just think Im going to crash into one
Deletewhen i passed up a car on the freeway this weekend, we were going the same direction but i was going faster which made it seem as if the other car was going the opposite direction
ReplyDeletein my neighborhood theirs always cars park in the side of the street, at times they seem that when I'm driving there coming tours me but their just not moving is just me
ReplyDeleteHa thats true, it always happens to me i get scared thinking we're gonna hit them lol
DeleteOnce we were parked in the parking lot waiting for my mom to come back from the store. As we were there the car that was next to us started going in reverse. At the moment we thought our car was moving forward! My dad even got scared and hit the brakes, then we realized we were not moving & that it was just the car next to us backing out lol
ReplyDeleteI agree This happend once when my mom was taking me to work! We weren't even moving in the first place!

ReplyDeleteWhen me and my family are on our way to Mexico, we always make a quick pit stop in the same spot where there are a lot of 18 wheelers. Well, I always stay in my truck and if the other trucks around me are moving, I feel like we are moving backwards.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger, everytime my family and I went to a carnival, I would always want to get on the ferris wheel because it looked like it was going fast but once I actually got on it felt like I was hardy moving.
ReplyDeletei had that same experience too!!
DeleteOn our trips to the country side, the various trees around us seem to be moving the opposite direction at the same speed when we're in the car. It's a weird feeling.
ReplyDeleteAna Mendoza
Silly ana trees don't move lol . Yet I get that feeling too xD
DeleteWhen im marching with the band there is this set where our lines come together and form a block and then we come back out. when im going in to the block the people coming towards me come faster than what it seems but we are going the same speed.
ReplyDeleteMakes sens. I bet youve never thought of it that way
DeleteThat really makes alot of sense because when they are coming towards you it seems much faster than if they were right beside.
Deletewhen I am standing still in the hallways everybody is going faster than me, coming and leaving my direction.
ReplyDeleteI've never actually thought about the speed of objects as they pass by I've only noticed directions but never actualy thought about how the speed or velocity of the object changes so when your walking at the mall the opposite direction of another person at the same speed it seems as if they are going faster
ReplyDeleteSometimes when I'm running, I feel like cars going past me are going super fast.Yet when I am running and I see a car coming towards me, it seems like FOREVER for it to reach where I am! yet the speed limit is the same for both cars on that street. I finally understand why that is though!
ReplyDeleteWhen i'm walking on the street and see a car pass next to me it feels like it's not going that fast. On the other lane it feels as if the cars are going faster than my speed when in reality if the drivers are following the speed limit then they're going the same speed.
ReplyDeletetwo cars going straight at each other
ReplyDeleteWhen I was walking around my neighborhood, I watched an ambulance drive past me with the siren on at around 60 mph. The pitch was higher than it was when it was whenever it was approaching me. Then the pitch began to fade as the further the ambulance had gotten..
ReplyDeleteWhile rushing to lunch, people that are going to the cafeteria too seem to not be moving fast but when you look the opposite direction of where you're going students seem to have a greater(almost double) the speed but in reality they don't.
